A taste of Britannia served at Vasse Village

Former colleagues Vivian Fry and Jean Bell took their experience in the catering industry and turned it into opportunity, recently opening The Village Chippy in Vasse Village.

Since launching in June this year, The Village Chippy has instantly become a huge hit amongst Vasse locals and the broader Busselton catchment area.

Choosing Vasse Village as the preferred location for their fish and chip shop, Viv and Jean, wanted to offer locals something a little different and came up with the idea to offer an English style fish and chips, a nod to Viv’s heritage.

“We both have lived in the locality for almost ten years and identified a niche in the market for a proper fish and chip offering”, said Viv.

“Our menu offers the favourites you expect from a fish and chip shop with English style chips, mushy peas and chip-shop curry sauce our specialties.

“We’ve had a few people who were a little weary of the English chips, but after sampling them, we are finding that people are returning and requesting the English style and these style of chips are now outperforming the crispier Australian style!

“We searched high and low for the perfect potatoes for make our chips, eventually sourcing the Maris Piper variety. Each day we peel, hand-cut, rinse and soak the potatoes, before drying and then frying. It’s a bit of work but the resulting quality chips are what we wanted to offer.

“We also serve authentic mushy peas, soaking marrowfat peas overnight before cooking, a selection of homemade pies and pickled eggs”.

“From our background in catering we also know the importance of understanding dietary requirements and are pleased that we can offer a completely gluten free fish and chip offering to our customers,” said Jean.

“We have a separate fryer for our hand-cut gluten chips and our gluten free battered fish and also offer a gluten free gravy.

“Our kitchen has been equipped with all new equipment and we are continuously fine tuning our techniques and what we offer our customers.

“We want to ensure our customers come back again and again and providing a friendly, welcoming shop is our customer service focus.”

Inside their shiny, new store it is clear that they have drawn inspiration from a typical English fish and chip shop, with red, black and white featured throughout and imagery of red double decker buses and post boxes on the walls.

The Village Chippy is located at Shop 3, 12 Napoleon Promenade, Vasse joining fellow food outlets Magpie Coffee Café and Newtown Chinese.
